Part 4 - Editing an area's boundary
Prerequisites
- You must have created and activated your account.
- You must have a current subscription.
- You need access to at least one area layer with at least one area created in it.
- You need editing permissions.
Required time: Up to 10 minutes.
At some point, areas you have created will need to have their boundaries changed. In this lesson, we’re going to learn how to do that. If you’ve completed Part 2, you’ll recognise much of the process from there.
Start by ensuring that one of your area layers is turned on, and then navigate to the area you want to edit. We’ve chosen the area we created in Part 2. Click the area on the map to open the information window. Your screen should look like this.

Click the Actions tab to open the area’s action menu, and then under the section titled Edit, click Edit area boundary.

Vision’s area editor will take care of getting everything set up for you. The base area layer will be automatically turned on and moved to the top of the layer control, and all the base areas that make up the one we’re editing will be pre-selected. Additionally, the current demographic values for the area will be shown on the right-hand side.
If they’re not already, turn on the labels on your base area layer, and you’re ready to go!

Editing the boundary is simple. Click unselected areas to add them to the one we’re changing, or click selected areas to remove them from the one we’re changing. As you do, the demographic totals will be updated on the right-hand side. This is how our screen looks.

When you’re ready, click the ‘Continue’ button in the bottom right to progress to the next stage. Click on the Impact analysis tab to view the attribute changes as a result of the edit you are going to make.
This table shows how the boundary change has impacted the attributes. It provides two columns, the original attribute values before the edit, and the new attribute values after the edit is saved. It will also show the impact on the attributes for any other areas within the layer that are affected by the boundary change.
This allows you to double-check the effect your proposed edit will have before committing to the change. You can close this dialogue box when you're finished by clicking the cross in the top right.

When you’re finished, click the Save button in the bottom-right.

This will close the area editor, and your edited area will be shown on the map.
That’s it! You’ve edited your first area.
