Create a new Custom Attribute

This article will guide you through the process of creating a new custom attribute to store your own data against area and location records.

Required time: 2 minutes

Getting started

From the Vision Home page

Click the Settings in the top right of your page.

Account Admin Settings button

  1. Select the Organisations tab on the left-hand side.
  2. Click the blue Manage button next to your Organisation name.

  1. Select Attributes from the navigation menu, and then
  2. Click Create new attribute at the top of the page.

Attributes 001

Step 1 - Choosing the type of attribute

Select the type of data you want to store within the attribute against your records.

Attributes 002

The type cannot be changed later, so it's important to choose the most appropriate type so it displays correctly and the UI can generate the best input for changing values.

Click Continue to move on.

Step 2 - Attribute settings

Give your attribute a name and then make changes to any other settings to meet your requirements.

Attributes 003

Make sure you give your attribute a name that reflects its use. The description is really only a backup to provide more information to a user if needed.

Settings specific to number-type attributes

Number-type attributes have additional settings that allow you to format how they will appear to users.

Attributes 004

As an example, if you were creating an attribute to hold the average sale value, you might use USD as the prefix and limit display values to 0 decimal places. A stored value of 1138.74 would then display as USD 1,138.

Click Continue to move on.

Step 3 - Choose which layers use the attribute

It's now time to specify which layers you would like to use the attribute on. Note that your layers are organised into groups by country to make finding them easier.

Attributes 005

Clicking a country header will expand or collapse the group. Clicking a layer will select/deselect it.

Click Continue to move on.

Step 4 - Review and finish

The final stage simply confirms your choices through this process. If you've made a mistake, now is the time to go back and correct it.

Attributes 006

Most processes in Vision end with a confirmation of your changes, allowing you to correct any mistakes before saving.

Click Save and close to complete the process.
